Upon admission to the major, students should consult the catalog or NanoEngineering website for their program of study or contact an undergraduate advisor through the Virtual Advising Center, if they have questions. Because some course and/or curricular changes may be made every year, it is imperative that students consult with the department’s undergraduate advisors on an annual basis.
CENG and NANO courses are offered only once a year and therefore should be taken in the recommended sequence. If courses are taken out of sequence, it may not always be possible to enroll in subsequent courses as needed. If this occurs, students should seek immediate departmental advice. When a student deviates from the sequence of courses specified for each curriculum in this catalog, it may be impossible to complete a CENG or NANO major within the normal four-year period.
Enrollment
Please refer to the specific major curriculum plan each quarter to ensure enrollment in the correct courses. The enrollment period can vary depending on student class levels. Incoming freshmen and incoming transfer students enrolling in their first quarter at UC San Diego have one pass to enroll in classes. These students are recommended to enroll in all specified core courses (CENG and NANO), and Chemistry, Physics, and Math courses*. Students enrolling in their second quarter or more (continuing students) are allotted two passes during the enrollment period. These students are recommended to enroll in any required Chemistry, Physics, and Math courses during their first pass, and their major core courses (CENG and NANO) in their second pass*. To enroll in a course that requires department approval, please submit a Course Pre-Authorization. Students within the major are given priority for enrollment. For students not in the corresponding major, approval will be considered after all major students have enrolled and seat capacity has been reviewed. If you are put on a waitlist for a major core requirement, please stay on the waitlist. Please note: no priority process is in place for elective courses.
*All students should contact their college advisor for General Education enrollment information.
For any questions regarding enrollment, current students can contact the undergraduate advisors via the Virtual Advising Center (VAC). Incoming freshmen may email advisors via ne-ugradinfo@ucsd.edu.
Program Alterations/Exceptions to Requirements
Variations from or exceptions to any program or course requirements are possible only if a petition is approved by the Undergraduate Affairs Committee before the courses in question are taken. Petition forms may be obtained from the Student Affairs Office and must be processed through this office. Students need to verify they have completed prerequisites for all classes - for departmental prerequisites click here.
All core courses used to fulfill major requirements must be taken at the University of California, San Diego. Transfer coursework cannot be substituted for core courses.
