Academic Planning

Upon admission to the major, students should consult the catalog or NanoEngineering Web site (http:// nanoengineering.ucsd.edu) for their program of study or their undergraduate advisor if they have questions. The program plan may be revised in subsequent years, but revisions involving curricular requirements require approval by the undergraduate advisor or the Undergraduate Affairs Committee. Because some course and/or curricular changes may be made every year, it is imperative that students consult with the department’s undergraduate advisor on an annual basis.
CENG courses are offered only once a year and therefore should be taken in the recommended sequence. If courses are taken out of sequence, it may not always be possible to enroll in courses as desired or needed. If this occurs, students should seek immediate departmental advice. When a student deviates from the sequence of courses specified for each curriculum in this catalog, it may be impossible to complete a CENG major within the normal four-year period.
In addition to the advising available through the Student Affairs Office, programmatic or technical advice may be obtained from chemical engineering faculty members. A specific faculty mentor is assigned to each student. All CENG students are required to meet with their faculty mentor at least once a quarter.

Program Alterations/Exceptions to Requirements

Variations from or exceptions to any program or course requirements are possible only if a petition is approved by the Undergraduate Affairs Committee before the courses in question are taken. Petition forms may be obtained from the Student Affairs Office and must be processed through this office.

Planning Tools

Here are some forms and charts that you want to either print or download to help with your academic planning.
  • Curriculum chart (PDF) - This is the curriculum chart based on the table in the General Catalog. It provides a visual aid to trace prerequisites.
  • Technical electives/Area of specialization - This is a duplicate link to the same page from the advising listing. You need this list to figure out what electives to take.
  • Scheduling table (PDF) - This is a blank form for you to print and then fill in your schedule.
  • Scheduling table for transfer students (PDF) - This is the blank form for transfer students.
  • Degree check table (PDF) - This is the form which helps you to track your progress. Take it along when you do your degree check with the Student Affairs Office to expedite the process.
  • Scheduling spreadsheets - This is a workbook of all three tables listed above so you can do the planning on your computer if you prefer it that way. They are not blank because you can make changes easily on a computer, and so the entries do not mean that they are what you must follow. The spreadsheets are readable with Excel, StarOffice, or QuattroPro.
