Mission Statement
In July 2007, the UCSD campus created the Department of NanoEngineering in the Jacobs School of Engineering. Our new department is one of the nation's first academic departments dedicated to research and graduate and undergraduate education in the interdisciplinary field of nanotechnology. Our department proposal also received strong endorsement from the Jacobs School's industry Council of Advisors and other corporate partners who understand the growing need for engineers trained to lead the way in nanotechnology.
The NanoEngineering Department is the sixth department of the Jacobs School, and will become the official administrative home for our chemical engineering education program. Building on existing strength at UCSD, the department will focus on research and education in the areas of biomedical nanotechnology, molecular and nanomaterials, computational nanotechnology, and nanotechnologies for energy conversion.
NanoEngineering will eventually be housed with our Structural Engineering Department in the new Engineering Building IV, which will be located on the main UCSD campus along the south side of Matthews Lane at the intersection with Voigt Drive. Construction of the 110,000 asf building will begin in 2008 and should be complete in 2010.
More details are available in our press release.
